Maybe healthy eating is a lifestyle for you, or you are simply on a diet. Either way, conversations about food are inevitable. Eating together is a daily event and when you eat with other people, your meals might attract a few questions.Use our diet talk strategies when you find yourself in an awkward food conversation.

Replace I with my body

There will be times you have dinner at someone's house, and not wanting to make the host feel badly about making foods you can't have, you find yourself picking around some foods or pushing some of the food being served around on your plate. This tactic may work, or it may prompt questions. There may be some people you meet who will tell you it's not healthy to cut something from your diet. It's easier to respond when you separate your body's needs from your needs. People won't feel as defensive (or feel like it's personal) if you explain your decision in biological terms.I'm just trying to do what's best for my body right now. We've all got different dietary needs, right? I never thought I'd give up starches, but my body just feels a lot better without them. Of course, there are lots of people who aren't sensitive to starches, but I'm just not one of those people.

Offer a Taste

Your diet may include some foods people don't normally see, let alone, have sampled. Maybe you've started adding toppings like chia seeds to your salad or quinoa to your plate. Try offering a taste, they may just be curious.Do you want a bite? It's good! I was originally pretty skeptical about chia seeds, too. I thought they were just for growing chia pets! But I've actually found them to be really helpful. Now I eat them all the time.

Keep It Short & Simple, Then Drop It

Just simply and pleasantly explain what you're eating, why you're eating it, and offer them a taste. You don't need to be defensive, since you're just eating in a way that works for you and your body.Over explaining can invite a debate and cause further discussion; keep it simple and then drop the subject. Sometimes the best thing you can do is refuse to engage and quietly, consistently, deliciously continue to eat vegetables and healthy food.

Realize It May Not Be About You

When others roll their eyes or even make comments about your food, they see you happily eating fruits and veggies, shining with health and energy. They wish they ate the way you do.You can only control you so don't engage in trying to solve someone else's eating issues. Go back to the tips mentioned above: Give a simple explanation of what works for your body, offer a taste, and drop it.Use these diet talk strategies whenever potentially awkward food conversations arise. You'll stay true to yourself and invite those who just may be curious to try something new.
